University Proposal

800m2

2019

With the growing gravitation towards apartment living as well as the future need for densification of town-housing in outer-city suburbia, it is important to address how these environments impact mental, physical, social behaviour and the broader community. While high-rise residential living presents a standardisation of living standards, the same premise also exists within the internalisation of suburban living and perpetual need for privacy. These environments discourage the prospect of community living, however both share qualities, which could be positively applied to future living typologies.

This proposal takes upon the challenge of activating lane-way spaces and the backyards of suburban homes , to create and speculate the possibilities and potential benefits these otherwise dormant spaces hold. A case study into the local suburb of Rose Park was undergone to apply this theory and see how the lives of Rachel and Hugh could intertwine. The site presented a young family demographic in close proximity to the city with access to future transport, lane-ways and streets scapes. The premise opens up the door for a new way of living within Adelaide’s suburbs, creating a broader and more immersed community environment, while allowing future endeavors within other areas of Rose Park and greater Adelaide.
